Just to say thanks. Next to implementing Unicode this has got to have been the most frequently requested enhancement of all time.

This was also happening to me, but only after crashes where I had saved
a file encoded as PC as UTF-8 BOM; noticed the error, saved again as
UNIX. Solved (apparently, hasn't happened again) by copying the text and
creating a new properly set up from the start file.

Thank you for your response. Not that large. But the idea would work very well as what I need to select in these cases is already marked off.

I was looking in the wrong place, under QUOTE Search /QUOTE in the Standard toolbar where it is under Find so not immediately visible. That is a good one, but the Control G is the one I like. I had tried it before but had not noticed the QUOTE Extend Search /QUOTE check box so, of course ...

a is the method I currently use and is impossible in this situation. I mean a large selection in this file can take a very long time to scroll to.

b. is still a guess at where the selection should end, and in this file a quarter of an inch in the scroll ...

I wonder if there is a way to select a large segment within a very large file without having to sit there scrolling down for half an hour. Manually moving down the scroll bar skips past beginning and end marks often miles off with even just a little nudge.

I am assuming the problem was solved with the updated 8.5.1:

When opening files, 3-byte UTF-8 characters that straddled multiples of 4KB may have been replaced with "?".

This problem was taken up by TextPad support and has been solved by them.

Yes I am sure, and because I am never sure of anything any more I just did it twice again just now.

Once on the .htm file, which has the proper headings and passed HTML Validator and has the BOM as well

and

Once with the .txt file which opened with the error.

I have tried two more things:

I retrieved the source file from the on-line version of the .htm file. With all instances of TP closed, I opened a new instance and pasted in the source code, saved UNIX utf-8 BOM (the file has the proper headings and has no html errors per HTML Validator) the file and ...

Working on a .txt file (but this is also happening on the same material in an .htm file). Very long: 52763 lines.

A few characters with diacriticals and the m-dash, ṃ ṭ � —

and not consistantly, that is, only a very few cases ...

Yes, sort of. There are some complications. But that seems to get what I need. (It captures ¹ which is good.
