"Compare Files" not working in v 5.2.0 !

Post by BigJohn »

I am running TextPad 5.2.0, 32-bit Edition on Windows XP Pro, Version 2002, Service Pack 2.

Tools -> Compare Files... brings up the Compare Text Files dialog. I already have two text files open, each of which is saved to disk with no unsaved changes.

When I click the OK button to do the comparison, a tiny dialog box blinks on the screen for just a flash. It's impossible to read anything on it. It is otherwise the same as if I had just hit the Cancel button instead of OK.

I went to Configure -> Preferences... to see if there were any pertinent options in there, but the Tools part doesn't display anything in the right pane. When I click the + mark next to Tools (in the left pane), it doesn't expand.

I'm a licensed user and Help -> About reflects my registration, so no problem there.

Has anyone else seen this? Please advise because I need to compare files. This is a must-fix bug.

Winver says XP Professional
Version 5.1 (Build 2600.xpsp_sp2_qfe.080814-1242 : Service Pack 2)

The compare files is working fine for me. If you have recently upgraded from 4.x to 5.x there is a behaviour change in that instead of opening an empty, read only document, the results are dumped to the Tool Output tab which for me is at the bottom of my application.

I found the problem: TextPad was popping up the results window on a second --non-existent-- monitor. I use two monitors at home and am using this laptop elsewhere today. Windows must have "lied" to TextPad that the second monitor is there.

I knew this "bug" was too bad to be in production. Is there a way I can cancel this thread?

I'm having the same problem. I installed XP on a new hard drive, and for some reason the Nvidia driver thinks I have a dual monitor system, which I don't. I'll have to figure that one out, as it didn't do that on my old drive.

But still, the question remains, why in the world would TextPad 5.2 attempt to display "Compare Files" results on a different display? Even if I did have a second display, I can't imagine that being useful at all. Wouldn't such behavior be a bug?

OK, all I had to do to fix the issue was uncheck the boxes for Tool Output and Search Results under Configure > Preferences > View, Dockable Windows. :)

Now to figure out why Nvidia thinks I'm running dual displays...
