Changing ALL files to open with textpad instead of Notepad

Post by alzheimer »

I am an OAP "newby" and recently got myself a new laptop. My old one had Texpad which I like.
I have now bought and installed Textpad on this machine.
Trouble is I can't get my files/folders to open BY DEFAULT with Textpad.
They still open with Notepad - which I do not like!
I know this is basic stuff for you youngsters out there - but I would really appreciate some simple instructions as to how to change the setting...Notepad seems to have hijacked the lot!!! EEK! :(

Using textpad you can select "Configure->Preferences" on the menu then select "associated files" and add the extenstions you want to be opened with textpad (like .txt). Several extensions can be selected using the "New extension" dropdown box, but if some is not found you can just type whatever ext. you want and then click add.

Another option is to use the notepad replacement file found there:
http://www.textpad.com/add-ons/index.html
There are several versions available (just search for "txplink"). Which one of them is the best i don't know since i have not tried them all. Basically what is done is to rename you notepad.exe file and replace with a notepad.exe that start textpad instead. Using this option you don't have to associate the extensions and every file that is opened with notepad by default will be opened with textpad. If you use Vista it's possible as well, but a bit harder because the files found under the windows folder is protected a bit better compared to XP.

If you prefer to use the notepad replacement file i can explain the steps a bit better, but the easiest way (especially if using Vista) is to just associate the ext.

Re Changing Notepad to Textpad

Dear Gan...you're a star! It worked... and now all my 1000 and 1 files and folders open in Texpad...which is MUCH nicer and easier to work.
I guessed it must be something as simple as that - but when you're an OAP newby - nothing is simple!!!!
Thank a million. :D
