Multiple associations to .txt, have lost icon

Post by atemp »

Since "upgrading" to 5.0.3 from 4.7.x, I have lost the textpad-associated icon for .txt files. I can still open to TP by double-click, but all I see is the ugly unassociated/generic icon.

Trying TweakUI to repair the icons does not fix the prob.

When I right-click to the Open With... dropdown, I see TextPad at the top of the list, then below that, Notepad, Firefox, WordPad and a few more apps who'd like a crack at opening a .txt.

I recall I did not uninstall the old TP first. Should I have? / ah, it's too late anyway. So,

How do I clean out all those other .txt contenders and reassociate only TP for my default plaintext editor? Sounds like regedit surgery...

Thx,

In order to apply the TextPad icon to a file type, you need to make the association in TextPad, rather than in Explorer. Please implement the following procedure:

From the Configure menu choose:

1. Preferences
2. Associated Files
3. Add the file extension
4. Click Apply / OK.

In Explorer(My Computer):

From the Tools menu in Explorer choose:

1. Folder options
2. File types
3. Select the file extension from the list
4. Click on Advanced
5. Change Icon
6. Under the heading "Look for icons in this file", browse to "C:\Program Files\TextPad 5\TextPad.exe"
7. Choose the TextPad icon
8. Click OK

I hope this helps.

Nope, sorry, the default Notepad text icon still comes up.

In XP only a given file's shortcut's icon can have its icon reliably remapped. I did the Explorer Tools|Folder Options|File Types| shuffle, reset the default reg to Notepad & tried to reregister to Textpad and its encapsulated icon, but the .txt icon remains unchanged & boring.

Other suggestions?

Icon fix worked for me, though ---

Post by srichter1 »

atemp, I lost my TextPad icon when my machine at work was upgraded and I had to reinstall everything I had brought in myself. I installed the latest TextPad, 5.0.3, and saw the problem you reported.

When I followed helios' advice and did the "Advanced" thing to choose a new icon for the txt file type (through Tools/Folder Options in windows explorer), that fixed up my txt icons like a champ. I didn't realize at first that you have to "Open" the .exe file itself to even see the icons that TextPad offers -- I was looking for a file named something.ico. Once I got past that, it was all very clear.

Wonder what's different about yours? And I still wonder why setting the association in explorer doesn't *automatically* change the icon. Oh well, stupid Windows...

Thx srichter1 for the commiseration. Strangely, the sitch seems to have resolved itself. I now get the lovely typographic-style black-on-green field classic TP icon w/ red borders -- just like old times.

It seems I had to do all the heroic association steps *and* reboot once or twice for the new icon to kick in. Weird windows indeed, but it works most of the time :?
