View In Web Browser

Post by mgordon2 »

Todays problem may not be directly related to TextPad, but TextPad lost an extremely important function today.

I use TextPad in combination with my Apache Server on Windows XP sr2 with all the latest updates as of yesterday.

I have a root folder for all web sites and TextPad is able to open all folders and files within these folders under the root folder. When opening a web site folder and opening a .shtml web file I am able to then open that file using "View In Web Browser" and TextPad sends the command to my browser of choice SeaMonkey (Mozilla).

Yesterday I downloaded and installed Internet Explorer 7.0 upgrade for Windows XP sr2 and installed it.

Today I cannot launch View In Web Browser from a sub folder within a web site folder. TextPad will send the command to SeaMonkey.exe and SeaMonkey will try and open and then instantly close.

If I move up one level into the web site main folder View In Web Browser opens the web document in SeaMonkey.

If I navigate to the sub folder in question with Windows Explorer and double click on the HTML document SeaMonkey opens the file.

If I open SeaMonkey Navigator and enter the URL http//127.0.0.1 my Apache Server opens the root folder and displays all the files and folders within the root folder. I can then use Apache to navigate to the sub folder in question and click on the web document and it opens in SeaMonkey.

This all leads me to believe something drastic has happened between TextPad and Internet Explorer 7.0 installation.

I have checked all my Windows XP settings for file associations, they are correct, I have checked Internet Options/Programs and SeaMonkey is the default web browser, and I have checked the TextPad Preferences for Document Classes/HTML and all extensions are set to "Open In Web Browser". I have double checked the sub folder attributes and file attributes and all are set to read/write.

One final interesting fact, I have set Tools in Text Pad to launch both Internet Explorer and SeaMonkey; when I select the open HTML document in TextPad and use Tools/SeaMonkey the file opens in SeaMonkey. In this manor both TextPad and SeaMonkey bypass my running Apache server and I cannot review any server side functions embedded into the web document.

The settings for Windows XP and TextPad that I know about must be correct since I can move up one folder into the "TextPad assigned Root Folder" and all works as it did the day before yesterday.

Do you have any suggestions?

Thanks for your support,

Update.

The problem has been resolved 99%.

TextPad now will send the open HTML document through the Apache server and open SeaMonkey to review all server side functions.

The cure was to uninstall Internet Explorer 7 and revert back to IE 6, then use System Restore to restore Windows XP Pro sr2 back to a date prior to installing IE 7.

The 1% not resolved is that now Windows XP associates HTML files to IE 6, and SHTML files to SeaMonkey. Windows has been set to associate HTML and SHTML files to SeaMonkey. These are icon associations, when double clicking on the HTML, or SHTML file using Windows Explorer SeaMonkey opens the file as it should as the default web browser.

This now is not a TexPad problem, but if any Windows experts have a workable solution I would really appreciate your assistance.

And the 1% remaining unsolved still doesn't allow to do what it should do ... as described in this post http://forums.textpad.com/viewtopic.php ... ht=browser - 2 years ago!

Besides, a right click on the browser view icon would give me the option to determine my menu bar ... nothing, however, related to setting up browsers.

That simple issue is now 2 years old, probably longer and I wonder how many years it will still take to fix this and since I am new to textpad and just evaluate the software I am inclined to say the fact that such a small issue on the textpad development side is unattended for so long, I am not really interested to find out about all the more serious issues and hence, uninstall this failure straight away.

'Not a TextPad problem"

Right click toolbar icon gives toolbar customizations. Horrors!

For options concerning viewing in web browser, use Configure>Preferences>Folders

mgordon2: Check your Apache conf.

ServerName localhost:80

Try under Configure>Preferences>Folders WWW IP address: http://localhost changing from http://127.0.0.1 or change the ServerName in Apache

Your file associations in Windows Explorer should be able to resolve the problem of what gets opened when you click a file as opposed to opening it in TextPad.

I am using W2k so the routing might not be exactly the same, but should be close enough:
In Explorer: Folders>Folder Options>File Types (wait until it loads) find the file type and select it for your options to change associations.
Thank you, and
