Changing Macro file names

Post by TPKeller »

According to the help file, if you click on Properties in the Configure -> Preferences -> Macros dialog, you can edit the properties of the macro, including: "The name of the disk file containing this macro."

However, in real life, this file name is not editable, and when I try to make meaninful file names out of macro files, they are no longer visible in the list of "available macros".

Is this something broken? At the very least, the help file should match up with the real world, and preferably, the file name should be editable so that a meaningful name can be attributed to the file.

Using TP473 here and I can not change the disk file name. Under "How to Change Macro Properties" the help file clearly states that "click the Properties button, you can view or modify the following properties ... File Name The name of the disk file containing this macro.". Since you might be using a diffrent version of TP I'll go easy on this but let's review: "you can view or modify the following properties" and read that again and again until we see that "or" thingie ;)
Then I open up and see

I am using 4.7.3.

So you are saying this is like the contest mailings that I get that say "You have won ONE MILLION DOLLARS or five cents"?

Too bad English doesn't allow parenthetical grouping to make meanings clear. But if it did, then what you are saying is that the help text means:

you can (view or modify) the following properties

What exactly are you trying to "go easy on"?

Maybe my life-long native English isn't the greatest, but when someone tells me that I can have Chocolate or Vanilla, I assume that I actually get to choose between Chocolate and Vanilla.

At the very least, the text should be re-written more clearly.

If you mosey on down to the TextPad/User directory and find the macro file you can rename it as you wish. The program will complain that it can't find the original one but click on through. Then go to Setup/Macros. NOTE: the files will be shown as Display Name, not File Name, so you need to select the old description. Run Properties and change the description as needed. All key assignments, etc will remain but if you have referred to the old macro name in some other macro you will have to alter the macro.
