Display Selected text length

At the bottom of the screen in the Status area the number of lines
selected is displayed and changes as more lines are selected.

I would like to see as part of the display, the length of the characters
selected. I would like to see it in decimal and in hex.

Easy to do.

And while they're at it, have TP display something when exactly one line (including newline) is selected ;-)
