Corrupting files when converting from Unix

I regularly modify both Unix and PC formated files using Textpad. 4.4.2. However, sometimes I need to change Unix formated files to PC format. This usually works fine using the Save options, but every now and again. The saved files get corrupted such that if I reload them half of the text has been replaced by squares. The squares only fill up the top line of the file but half of the file has dissappeared. Is this just a problem with my version of Textpad or is there a particular character in the file that could be causing this?

I'v put up with the problem for a while but just recently I lost a major chunk of code that I didn't have a back up for so I thought I would look for a solution. I think the same problem could be causing MSDEV to crash when I edit the same files.

4.4.2? Quite an old version...

Does it happen with current version (4.7.2) as well?

When saving with PC line endings, do you change encoding as well?

Additionally, when it does happen, snag a text editor and see what the squares are. It may provide some insight into what/how your data is being corrupted. I've had no issues converting between Unix and Windows format within TP.

Are the files saved onto a UNIX computer from you PC using a SAMBA drive at any point? I occassionally get this problem when doing this (and I'm not usually converting between PC <-> UNIX format, so this is probably irrelevant).
