Help with selecting text using a mouse

I have just installed TextPad on my work computer and I cannot highlght portions of text using the mouse. It works with the shift button and arrow keys, but that is too time consuming. I have tried changing configuration settings, but it doesn't seem to help. I've copied the same files to my other computer and selecting text works fine. As far as I can tell (by comparing settings from both computers, they are set up the same. I've tried reinstalling as well. The text consists of strings of letters (DNA sequences), but I've also tried selecting text in word documents as well.
Any suggestions?

You don't say which operating system you are using, but if it is Windows XP, then please ensure that you have installed service pack 1 for XP.
