ERROR 1402

Post by cpgm »

I have downloaded the trial version of Textpad 4.7. When I stall it, there is an error message:"Error 1402. Could not open key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\software\Helios\Textpad4\Preferences. Verify that you have sufficient access to that key, or contact your support personnel" Anyone know the solution?

The setup program assumes that HKEY_CURRENT_USER is writable by the logged-in user. This is normally a safe assumption, as that part of the registry was designed to hold stuff pertaining only to the current user. It sounds like the security for that key, or the subkey used by TextPad (HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Helios\TextPad 4) has been screwed down too tight. Check what's up with your system administrator.

Thanks for reply!!

I tried to remove the software from my "add/remove program dialog". It gave me the same message and did not let me do so. Do you know what should I do?

p.s. I downloaded the software at home

I guess your system administrator isn't much help with your home PC

I've heard that upgrades from Windows 98 to XP can cause the access rights in the registry to break. See if this fixes it:

1. Click Start/Run and run REGEDIT.
2. Click the + next to HKEY_CURRENT_USER and then Software and then Helios.
3. Right click TextPad 4 and choose Permissions.
4. On the Permissions dialog box, select your username and allow yourself full control.
5. Click OK.

If this works, you're likely to have the same problem installing any software, so give yourself full control to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software as well.

Thanks again!

There is no Helios folder inside the HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software folder. Why??

My Window is ME.

Hmm. I don't think that registry security has been implemented in ME. Perhaps you've reached the limits of what it can store, which is a lot less than NT based operating systems, such as XP. Alternatively, the registry may be corrupt, which can easily occur if your PC loses power, rather than being shut down cleanly.

Other than a fresh install of ME, I'm not sure how to solve these problems, but perhaps someone else has some ideas.

I am having no problems with TextPad 4.7.2 on WIN98ME 4.9.3000.

Re:

User Profiles has not been enabled on this system (see s_reynisson's earlier reference to http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=236427).

I have a full Helios folder with about 16 sub keys.

I do not have a key for Permissions.
And when I right click on TestPad 4, I do not have a "Permissions" choice, only the choices to collapse, find, rename, new, etc.

I do have a Preferences key with about 13 string/data values. None of those is for permissions.

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE has full Software\Helios\TextPad with sub keys for 4.4 and 4.4.2 with just single default values not set.
Hope this was helpful.............good luck,
Bob
