Files with the extension .DAT cannot be opened

TextPad (4.7.1) hangs when I try to open a file with the extension .dat .
The problem occurs when opening by double-click or inside TextPad through the "file open" menue or "file rename" entering the extension .dat .

I have the same problem. No problem with other files, just those with extension .DAT.
