I'm getting confused and don't know what to do next ... I'm trying to get my file associations correct for .shtm and .shtml. I've read other posts on the forums about this, but one step really seems to elude me. Please be patient, I will try to describe as coherently as I can ...
Within TextPad I have set a new document class, SHTM
I went to file associations and entered the .shtm and .shtml extensions with description HTML document. (I've also done this as description SHTML document with the same results as follows).
I opened Explorer, tools/file options/ file types, scrolled down to
SHTM and SHTML documents, where they show up, SHTM as HTML document, opens with TextPad. SHMTL as HTML document, opens with Netscape (which is not my default browser). When I set both of them to open with Internet Explorer, which I apparently must do in order for the "open in browser window" function in TextPad to work, the icons for both are the I.E. icon.
Back in TextPad, all seems okay EXCEPT for this:
When I have a new document open, and go to "open" and the "open file(s)" window is in view, then the "files of type" drop down menu has "SHTML" (not "SHTM") selected, and the only files that show up in the larger currently saved files window are SHTML files. Even in folders where I have SHTM documents, they do not show in the large window. This means in order to find and open a currently saved SHTM document, I have to select "all files" in order to see them.
I have been using trial and error to fix this, searched the forums and follwed the suggestions there, but nothing changes the situation in the paragraph above and I cannot figure out what I need to do. I would really like to be able to choose Files of types SHTM and be able to see all of them within that folder without have to scroll through every single file type in the folder. I also don't understand why the drop down menu shows SHTML instead of SHTM which is the document class I set up originally within TextPad.
I have Windows XP, TextPad 4.6.2
I have written down somewhere the steps to follow to set the TextPad registry settings back to where they were when installed. Is this my next option or is there something I'm doing wrong or....?

Mamae, try this.
Configure

File Name Filters
New
Description = SHTM (*.shtm*)
Wild cards: *.shtm, *.shtml
[edit] I just reread your thing and instead of New, you will want to find your SHTML filter (and you can probably rename it in this screen to SHTM if you'd like it to match your document class)
If it still doesn't work, post the info from your file name filter for this class and we'll see what we can find out.
