Problem with running Java Application/Applets

Whenever I try to run my java programs, I always get an error in the DOS prompt saying ----
"Exception in thread "main" java.lang.NoClassDefFoundError: girlscoutprogram"------:?: ....I believe I have downloaded the necessary Java components, but I'm not too sure. Can someone tell me if they've encountered this? And if so, how they resolved it. Thanks
