Textpad freezes with Samba

This problem has been posted before, but there didn't seem to be any public responses at http://www.textpad.com/forum/read.php?f=1&i=1697&t=1697

I get the exact same problem. Samba 2.2.3a is running on Redhat Linux 7.4 (default samba rpm package) and I'm using 4.6 Textpad on W2K.
I've been told by the Textpad tech support folks that this is a Samba problem. That might be the case but it is definitely something specific to Textpad. I don't get that problem with other editors (Homesite specifically) or using Internet Explorer, right click, "open with Textpad".
Here's what tech support suggested but didn't work:
