Textpad freezes with Samba

Post by Juan Camacho »

This problem has been posted before, but there didn't seem to be any public responses at http://www.textpad.com/forum/read.php?f=1&i=1697&t=1697

I get the exact same problem. Samba 2.2.3a is running on Redhat Linux 7.4 (default samba rpm package) and I'm using 4.6 Textpad on W2K.

I've been told by the Textpad tech support folks that this is a Samba problem. That might be the case but it is definitely something specific to Textpad. I don't get that problem with other editors (Homesite specifically) or using Internet Explorer, right click, "open with Textpad".

Here's what tech support suggested but didn't work:

I've been using TextPad with Samba for a couple of years now, and not a problem.

I've been using TextPad to build and maintain websites on a Linux server running Samba for a couple of years, and from time to time I do experience a delay in accessing files.

But to be honest, I doubt it has anything to do with TextPad. I also get the same behaviour from Windows Explorer. More than likely the delay is a function of your Samba box's hard drive speed, LAN traffic or even memory issues on either of the systems. If your TextPad system is low on RAM, I'd recommend upgrading. If your Samba box is an older machine with a slower drive (and especially if it's a live web server that gets a lot of traffic), that's probably the culprit.

I have just switched from Windows 98 to Windows XP and this problem has started happening to me. I have been using linux/samba for years to share files among my various windows boxen. I have also been using TextPad for several years, often editing files on shared volumes, without any problem.

This only happens on the one box that I have Win XP on, and it only happens with TextPad.
