Macro to update version number?

Is there a way I could create a macro that will update a version number in my file when I save that file?

The first hurdle I see is to have it read a number from the file, increment it and write that number back.

The second hurdle I see is to automatically invoke that macro before the save command is executed (you might call this a before-demon to the save command).

Any helpful advice is greatly appreciated.
