Create syntax definition

I would first like to apologive if this has been dealt with before. I tried looking around, but apparently in all the wrong places.

Well, I would like to know where I can get a quick primer on how to create my own syntax definition. I already looked at the ones I have on my computer, but I wasn't sure of all of the fields, as well as how many keywords there are, and which colors represent which keywords, etc. etc.

Hi,

Does anyone know where I could find a syntax definition file that will properly highlight instant message type log file?

Stelly: Hi how are you
Ross: Good, and you?
Stelly: not too bad
Ross: time for lunch?

It would be nice to highlight each person's message in a different color. Or
even just the names, Stelly and Ross, in different colors.
