Recording keystroke macros using copy and paste

I want to record a keystroke macro which is quite long. As it contains lots of sections that are similar I'd much rather copy and paste these bits. However, when I play a macro back it pastes whatever is on the clipboard, even though I started recording before pressing copy. Does anyone know if I am doing something wrong or whether there is no way round this?
