jumping at the end of the line

I am using wrap lines, but when I come to the end of the window area, the line is often not broken before I get to the end, but carries on for a bit, until the end of the word is reached. This causes the screen to jump to the wider dimension and then jump back...and it's driving me nuts. Is there some setting to stop this action?

In the preferences (ctrl-q-p) you can set the column number at which words are wrapped. Set it to something shorter than your window width and be sure to activate the check box.
