"Keep files locked while editing them"

I'm curious if there's any OTHER option similar to this one ("Keep files locked while editing them") that would simply mark a file as READ-ONLY to everyone else while I'm editing them. Any work-arounds, patches, or insider information on this subject?

(The reason I want this is: I want to edit a file, be able to save it AND view it in IE, and yet prevent everyone else from editing it... Currently, this allows me to edit it but not view it, while preventing everyone else from editing it...)
