Bug in Textpad 4.4 under Win2k

Post by wkc »

I use Textpad 4.4 under Window 2000. In the status bar at the lower right corner, it has these following items "Read", "Ovr", "Block", "Sync", etc....When this function is not active, it's in light grey color, and you can toggle between active and inactive by double clicking....or use <Cap Lock> to change "Cap". My problem is when I use it by double clicking it, or use the <Cap Lock>, instead of changing from light grey to black, and vice versa, the word just disappear, so i will have no idea is that function active or not.

Does anyone has this problem? Does anyone know how to fix it?

Thanks.
Andreas

I think I have Textpad 4.4.0 It works fine on my machine at home, but not on my machine at work, which I do most programming at.

Actually, for my machine at home, if I just open textpad, I click on the textpad tab on my task bar, which will minimize it, or just click the "_" box at the top right to minimize, when I open it up (maximize again), all those box in text pad lower right will also disappear....you may have to min it and max it sever time....but in this case, when I double click on it, the word will come back out and it work fine again, it just disappear when i min it and max it.............

but for the machine at work, those box will be empty out when I double click it to choose between active and inactive...the only way to get the word show up again is to min it and max it....

Thanks.

I figure out to generate this problem......

When the "Document Tab" is active (under "View" --> "Document Tab"), the function in the status bar ("Read", "Ovr", "Block", etc) will disappear with just an empty box if double click on. But when the "Document Tab" is set back to inactive, it will go back to normal

This problem is found in version 4.3.2, 4.4.0, 4.4.1. Under Windows 2000 and NT4.

It's reproducible, perhaps a video driver problem (Viper 770 - TNT2 chipset). This happens not only when you double click on a status indicator, but also when you press the keyboard equilevant, e.g. pressing [caps lock] (Caps), [insert] (ovr), [Ctrl]-QB (Block), or make the file read only (Read).

Does it happen with other apps as well? Or just with Textpad?

Personally I don't recall seeing this type of bug anywhere else. I presume TextPad is using some standard common controls to display the taskbar. What other apps are known to use those same common controls, with the same functionality (i.e. changing the color of the indicator (gray to black) instead of chaning the text of the indicator (CAPS to null))?

If it helps, it occurs in my work PC also.

Is there a better way to switch between the document? The Document selector use up so much space on the screen.....

For wkc: Ctrl-Tab or Windows-Menü or Document-Tabs.

In future, please start a new thread for questions that have nothing to do with the current thread's topic.

Hello.

I reported the described behavior to Keith two months ago.

I can reproduce it on different IBM ThinkPads and on HP Vectra (five different video cards) with Win2k with and without SP1. The problem is, Keith can't reproduce it on a regular basis. Sometimes he's able to see it but as soon as he fires the debugger the bug vanishes.

He wasn't able to figure it out in time for the 4.4.1 release, anyway he's still working on it.

Perhaps there could be a problem with Win2k localizations... I use the Italian version, what about the other guys who can reproduce the problem?

Hello again.

On my IBM notebook (ThinkPad 600X) the behavior is correct if I disable the document tabs.

Just to keep you and Keith informed...

I'm using standard (English) Windows 2000, with English and Greek languages selected. The problem DOES disappear if document tabs are disabled.

This problem has been traced to a Visual C++ compiler optimisation problem. We think we have fixed it, but would appreciate it if any of you who have experienced it would check the fix works. Please download:

http://www.textpad.com/download/files/txpeng441a.zip

This file only contains textpad.exe, so backup your current copy of that file and extract the new one to the same folder.

Please email support@textpad.com, if you have any problems.
