adding diagrams and generic docs

Apologies in advance if this has already been answered in the forum - I have looked but cannot see any reference. Is it possible to include diagrams (I am specifically not specifying the format) into text? I am looking for the most portable format for diagrams - I would like to create a generic document that could be (relatively) easily converted to other format such as PDF, HTML etc. hence saving file as .txt -- is this the most sensible? the document should not rely on a proprietry tool to be displayed ie mcrosftwrd
