On PC reset TextPad behaves badly

Post by terrypin »

My ancient but sweetly running TextPad 7.6.4 (64-bit Edition) has recently developed a frustrating problem. On a reset or reboot of my Win 10 desktop PC:
1. None of my regular workspace files are listed in the Document selector, apart from any opened since startup.
I can fix that with File > Worspace and opening my latest .tws fil.

2. Dragging a file in no longer works (invalid symbol appears).
I have to close and restart TextPad to fix that.

I'm researching the wide sources of 'startup' programs but any ideas/fixes would be appreciated.

1. You should check that there are no bad sectors on your hard drive as described here:
https://www.howtogeek.com/1033/how-to-use-chkdsk-on-windows/

2. Windows does not allow files to be dragged and dropped onto apps running as administrator. TextPad can be run that way by right clicking it on the Start menu and choosing Run as Administrator.

Thanks, had not realised that TextPad had become elevated. Corrected it and drag facility thankfully restored.

That's a revelation. It surprised me that running an application as administrator reduces funcionality. I'd expect the converse?
EDIT: Further reading explained that it was a security issuer. I could also work around it by elevating Explorter too.
