Would like open file window to retain previous settings

This may be OS-related, but when I open my "open file" window, I like it to be detail, date order in reverse, and large enough to see everything. But every time I open the window again, (and I do it a lot), I have to restore those settings. Could it be set up to keep them?

While I am at it, when I do a "save as" on an existing file, I would like the current file type to be there by default.

Also, open-file-at-cursor should look first for the file name, then for the file name with the current file type.

PS - You added something I really needed - open file now shows me the files in the same directory as the current file.
