Is it possible to record a macro to find position

Hi all,
i am working on automation using raw data i.e flat file,main objective is to verify the position of the raw data...

eg:
4919 ^4919 ^B300006110
for 4919 starting position =1 and ending position = 4

is there a way to find the position using macros or any other tools...please suggest me
