Word wrap sometimes splits words

Post by aidtopia »

I'm using TextPad to write a lot of plain text files. I use a single blank line between paragraphs, and let TextPad wrap lines to the window width.

With TextPad 4.x I'd occasionally see a word get split rather than wrapping at the nearest space. With TextPad 5.4.2, this seems to have become much more prevalent.

In general, longer paragraphs wrap correctly. Short paragraphs--those just a couple words longer than a single line--will often split a word arbitrarily.

There's no harm done because I save the files without the word-wrap breaks, but it does make reading/editing more difficult.

I've tried turning word wrap off and back on, but it chooses the same bad breaks, so the problem is deterministic. I've tried adjusting the window width, which forces it to choose new breaks, but some paragraphs continue to be wrapped incorrectly. I've search the web and these forums for similar reports, but I haven't found any.

Is this a known bug?

Apostrophes trigger the misbehavior

Post by aidtopia »

Upon additional experimentation, it seems the problem happens when the word at the margin has an apostrophe in it.

For example, if the word near the right margin is "Peter", wrapping works correctly. If, however, the word is "Peter's", then it will be arbitrarily split at any point, e.g. "Pe"/"ter's".

The long/short paragraph distinction I made seems to be a red herring.
