Hello,
I think this has been discussed previously, but I could not find it. As a curious asside, unless my eyes deceive me, just about any combination of terms as used in the subject of this discussion produces the same search results.
The question is, with the default file type set at ".", why does the open dialogue not open at "."? or, put another way, how can one set the open dialogue to open showing a specific file type? For me: "."
Set default file type in file open dialogue

Set default file type in file open dialogue
Thank you, and

This fix not sticking: EDIT 1
Hello Ben,
The fix you suggested works, no question. But there is an additional issue in there somewhere in that periodically it reverts to another file open selection ???(C++ ...) in this case.
I have a temporary fix which is to use >Configure >Preferences >File Name Filters >
and move the *.* All Files from the top position to the bottom position, apply, and move it back up again and close TextPad. It then opens at All Files again.
Any ideas on how to get it to stick? Or what I am doing that is causing it to not stick?
Seems to me that Windows 7 64 bit does this more than I am used to ... that is, settings do not take, revert. But I cannot prove that. See recent post concerning word-wrap not sticking.
EDIT: I think I see what is going on here. It seems that TP will use the last Filter used. If it has changed because one has opened a file of another type, or by accident, or by switching from the explorer view to a clip book, the open file filter changes. If not changed back before closing, that is what will be used when opening a new instance of TP.
Seems to me it would be better to have new instances open to a default setting that needed to be changed as with other default settings, in a new instance when no other instances were open, etc.

You're right. I hadn't this noticed before because I don't often use those filters.
It seems that when TextPad closes it stores this setting in the registry at
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Helios\TextPad 5\Preferences\FilterIndex
I don't know of a way to stop it doing that, so this is probably a change request.

It's worse than that.
Having played with the filter setting, on your prompting, I've noticed that the setting in the File | Open dialogue box affects the setting in the File | Save As dialogue box as well, causing the user possibly to save a file with an unwanted extension if they're not paying attention to what's going on.
