Multiple Instances under Windows 7

I am running Windows 7 at work and home and have TextPad installed in both locations. I also am also running Windows 7 in both locations.

I have turned off "Allow multiple instances to run" in the General Preferences.
If I use the file menu to open a document, only one instance runs.
If I use the contextual menu in Windows explorer, only one instance runs.
If I double-click on a file, another instance is opened.

I didn't see this happen when I was running under XP Professional or Vista.

Is this a TextPad issue or a Windows 7 issue?

Same here. Seems to be a Windows 7 issue...
I've been playing with the compatibility options for Textpad set to Vista or XP, unfortunaltely the don't fix it

Any other idea?

Try making the association to the particular file type in TextPad.

Configure/Preferences/Associated Files

That seems to have done the trick.

It appears to be linked to the "Replace Notepad" functionality.

Can we learn the exact condition under which a new TextPad instance gets created under Windows 7? I don't "see" right now under which conditions new instances are created.

Of course, I want my "one instance" in all cases, with all file extensions, as noted in the original post.

I think I explained it fairly well above:

I have "Replace Notepad" selected in my TextPad preferences.
A file is associated with Notepad, not TextPad, which is the system default.
I double-click on a file with that association.
Another instance of TextPad is launched and the file is displayed.

Oh I see, you're right.
I see the connection to "Replace Notepad".
Probably associating all extensions explicitly (as you said) is the best way to go. Thanks for the clarification.
