columnar line numbering

how can I get line numbering to leave the (relative) columns intact?

I don't care whether low numbers have leading spaces or leading zeros, though it would be nice to be able to control.

I'm using v4.1.03 (32) on Win95b, and I'm not willing to allow that MSI garbage on the target system, so updating to 4.6 is apparently not an option.
