Tab Stop & selected Text

Why are tabs different when I have a block of text selected? When nothing is selected My tabs go out 5 spaces each time. But the moment I hilite a few line of code, and hit tab. Boom I get two tab charaters and a space or two? Any clues or do I have something setup wrong?
Do this your self, Turn on visibale spaces & hilite two rows that start a column one. Hit Tab, you get 2 tabs and 2 spaces. With the lines still selected hit tab again you now have 5 tabs and one space total. Hit tab one more time you get 8 tabs and no spaces? This is the pattern that continues? This is what happens on my system with my setup. Can anyone explain?

There are 2 settings in a document class for tabs: tabulator width and indent width (or however they're called in english). See in the according document class if these settings are different. That may cause this effect.
