Random dollar signs in my files?

I have noticed that some of my files have acquired dollar signs ($) in various places in the file. Is this a TextPad bug, or possibly some sort of obscure virus?
I haven't had any luck with an internet search for this problem.

Has anyone seen this before?

Do you see these dollar signs if you open the file with another editor?
