Desktop Icons are generic in Win2K

I would like my .txt files to display the TextPad icon on my Win2K desktop. I Have tried using Xteq Systems X-Setup to clear the Windows Icon Cache -- even this doesn't seem to do the trick (although after a reboot I watched every other icon on my desktop refresh!) Any suggestions?

In win98, you can open Win Explorer, select the 'Tools/Folder Options" menu item, then select the 'File Types' tab. Scan down the list until you find where the '.txt' extension is, click the 'Edit' button and you see a 'Change Icon' button.

I assume there would be something similar or the same for Windows eXPensive

Thanks for the reply, I tried your suggestion. However, this apparently doesn't work at the desktop "level". If you put a folder on the desktop, then yes, you can go to folder options in the newly created folder, But in Explorer there doesn't seem to be a pertinent menu option.

My file associations are correct -- when I double click one of the generic .txt icons TextPad launches. Maybe I should just forget about it, but it does bug me. Like I said, I have tried using "tweak" software to clear the Windows Icon Cache. Even this doesn't do it.

I have also run into this. It is very unpleasing, especially when picking out textpad files from a host of generated files, which often occurs with compilers etc.
- Running Win2K 5.00.2195, Service Pack 3

Hello Robert,

In order to apply the TextPad icon to a file type, you need to make the
association in TextPad, rather than in Explorer. Please implement the
following procedure:

From the Configure menu choose:

1. Preferences
2. Associated Files
3. Add the file extension
4. Click Apply / OK.

In Explorer:

From the Tools menu in Explorer choose:

1. Folder options
2. File types
3. Select the file extension from the list
4. Click on Advanced
5. Change Icon
6. Select the TextPad icon
7. Click OK
