TextPad Lives! Proof!

Post by Richard Thomas »

Hi All,

I emailed Helios again, and this time I got more than the standard "we're still working on it" reply. I got an email from Keith MacDonald of Helios, who had this to say:

"It most definitely is still in development. The hiatus has been due to various factors, including Microsoft's change of direction with .Net, so it is being rearchitected for portability, to assure its long term future. I don't want to go into details until that work nears completion.

"In the meantime you can expect to see a maintenance release by the end of August."

So there we go - it's being .NETted (makes sense really), and there's something on the way for us soonish.

I noticed that Keith said it was being rearchitecured for "portability" -- obviously this ties in with .NET - perhaps we'll see it running on Linux or PocketPC one day?

Yay!

.NET? So this means to run the next version we will need that 20+MB download from Windows Update to run .NET apps?

As for TextPad on the Pocket PC - Omygosh! I'd love that!!!!

Well, yes for current MS-OSs, but obviously, future OSs from MS -- plus Service Packs for existing OSs I expect -- will include the .NET environment.

As for the PocketPC - that was me speculating, but yes, it would be nice! Would be even nicer if I could afford a PocketPC to run it on... :oP

I wouldn't call dotNet "Portability" ... There are other OS besides MS-Cash :-)

Yes, like Linux, for which there are various .NET porting projects.

Great news that TextPad is in development. But .NET.... One huge reason for me not to use it. And August - that's a long time. It's nok like December or January. They really have to put a lot of work into TextPad if they shall keep up with the compeditors.

Well... My next PC will run Linux, and that will NOT run .NET (even if a port comes).

Why won't you use it if it's written in .NET?

I'd expect that any modern Windows installation will have the .NET runtimes within a year - you know what MS are like for managing to get their products installed on their systems!

Oh, and when I mentioned August, I meant August 2002! So this maintenance release is overdue...

I hate Micro$oft and everything it stands for - that's why.

On the more technical site, MS have an extreamely poor secuerty history - it should be a wonder if .NET should be their first application with a proper secuerty level at the releese.
Further more .NET is very new and have not have a chance to mature. I think it's very riscy for any company to base their applications on it at this time. Give it a few years to see if it catches on, or if it works.

How ever I will not judge TextPad 5 before I've seen it, so I'm looking forward to see it.
My decision to move to Linux when I get a new computer is made. Windows can't offer me what I need any more.
