Documentation about syntax highlighting

Hi,
is there a documentation about how to create the syntax highlighting files? I want to have a highlighter that support PHP, HTML and MySQL syntax. I don't know how to merge the different syntax files into one. Where is the difference between the [Keywords 1] - [Keywords 6] sections (from PHP4 syntax)? Can I add more sections? Are there others? Can I have more than 2 typ of comments? and so on...
