These days I find myself doing the majority of my work on Linux rather than Windoze (embedded stuff). There is much about Linux that is vastly superior to Windoze, but the big thing missing, in my opinion, is a port of TextPad.
That said, I would like to set up my dual-boot system to use Wine (or some other method - I'm not picky, except for my choice of editor) to run TextPad. I am currently running Mandrake 8.2 with KDE as my windowing environment.
Have you support types or anyone who frequents this forum ever done this? Exactly what steps were required?
Thanks loads for a wonderful product!

Yes, I have TextPad running with RedHat 7.2. Works great.

Re: Configuring Wine to run TextPad
So HOW do you do it?
I have not set up Wine for anything before, so are there any magical incantations required that are VERY clearly mentioned in the docs? Would you share your .config (or whatever) files?
Thanks!

Re: Configuring Wine to run TextPad
It's been await since I did it, but I recall I didn't have any problems once I grabbed the LATEST version of wine. I would be happy to share any info. that you think would be helpful. As soon as I get home from work today I will send you any pertinent configuration files I have. There is also a great perl script I found on the web that will tell you if you have any wine related configuration problems. Do you want it?

Oh, YES, please!
If you want to contact me directly, I'm at rbraithwaite@sharplabs.com.
However, I suspect that there are other people cruising here that would like to know the answer as well.
Until the dear folk writing TextPad port it to Linux, this is the best we can do. And although I can use VI and EMACS, I really don't want to have to.

Re: Wine, have you used VMWare? I'm wondering what the plus's and minuses are of one over the other?
I welcome any opinions -- and thanks!

I do have experience with VMware in both its current incarnation and in previous versions. The problem with VMware is two-fold. First, it is very costly, both in terms of price ($395 last time I checked) and in resources (512 MB RAM is a reasonable amount for a 1 GHz machine for Outhouse^H^H^H^H^Hlook to work properly). Second, I am doing development on Linux, not on Windoze and I want to edit files in Linux, not in Windoze.
TextPad is the best editor I have used and I wish there was a Java 1.1.8 version of it, so I really could run it everywhere (including on Tao Intent, Solaris, Max OS-X, etc). But if I can't do that, I would gladly settle for a Linux version.
-Ron
p.s., Don't give me any crap about not being able to actually write cross-platform apps in Java, since I have been doing exactly that for about 6 years.

Re: Configuring Wine to run TextPad
You're right. I've tried about a dozen editors for unix/linux and none compare to TextPad. I use VI for quick and dirty changes when I'm not at my desk, but I do all my development using TextPad on my PC w/ networked drives to solaris hosts. A lot of my co-workers are EMACS fanatics, but I really don't know what they see in it.
When I finally got around to installing Linux (RedHat 7.2) on my machine, I was saddened by the choice of editors. So I installed Wine, and it was back to TextPad for me!
