Transferring prefrences in XP

Post by Sage Tyrtle »

Hi there,

Just upgraded to XP and am having trouble figuring out how to transfer my Textpad preferences from my backup CD to Textpad. Any suggestions?

Thanks much,

You may have a problem if you did not export them.

They are stored in the Current User key in the registry -
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Helios\TextPad 4. Here are soem ntoes on the process.

1. What The Docs say:
The best way is to export that key while the machine is running - which is covered in the documents if you look up "preferences" or "exporting". You navigate to the key above and do an export. Unfortunately I've screwed that one up myself before this.

2. If you didn't and were running Windows NT or 2000 before
Not too hard. You have to load your old user key manually and extract that subkey.

3. If you didn't and you were running Win9x/Me
This can be done, but it's a hassle. You need to run the Win9x regedit, make it think that it is in a non-win32 environment (as though you had done a "boot to command prompt under Win9x") and then it should let you export the key above from your old user.dat file. This has lots of variations and may take trial and error.

On the bright side:

WinXP lets you add "favorites" in your registry. Since I had to manually recreate mine after my XP move, I tend to be pretty religious about running Regedit every few days, picking "TextPad" from my favorites list, and exporting the key.
