Unable to open TXT files in W2K

Post by Gene King »

Textpad was working fine but I got a new PC. I have installed TextPad on the new box which is running W2K Server. No problems with the installation but it will not open TXT files. If I change the extension, they open just fine. But if they are TXT files it says it loads them and then does not display them.

Any ideas?

I have reinstalled, no difference.

I have tried to delete all HELIOS entries from my registry, no difference.

It is like it will open only documents covered by the default document class.

Thanks.

What icon does Explorer show for those files?

Right now it shows notepad icon because I dropped the association to textpad.

1) I'd reboot if you messed around with your registry.
2) Go into TextPad and Configure > Preferences > Associated files, add txt back in.
3) Still in Preferences, expand document classes, and peek at your settings for Text -- make sure you don't have anything weird set, for instance an invalid syntax file.
4) Close all Explorer sessions, then open one. ... Any better?

I have rebooted numerous times since I started working on this problem.

I turned off the syntax file for TEXT files and tried to open a file. It shows me the contents of the file but then hangs. You can only stop the process to get rid of it.

I started a new document, entered stuff into it, saved it, closed the window, then tried to read the file back in. It hung without displaying anything. Same problem.

I noticed that even when I uninstall textpad, which I have done numerous times, it leaves tracks in the registry. Is there a way to clear all those out? I am wondering if one of those is the problem.

Thanks for trying.

Additional observation. It turns out I can edit txt files from network drives, just not local drives.

Anyone seen this problem before?

My final post to this thread.

After recommendation from Helios, I turned off my AV software, the problem went away. We are using Macafee NetShield. Turned out it was the outbound that needed to be turned off. I downloaded a service pack from Macafee and now it seems to be working fine.
