Can't see line numbers in TP 4.5 on WinXP

When I enable line number display, I see the left margin change, but it's as if the entire document simply shifted right: there's no display, just empty space. I would greatly appreciate any suggestions, since I've noticed that at least one person claims to be able to see line numbers in XP after upgrading from 4.2 to 4.5.

Just an idea: under the document class of the document displayed, check the color settings for "Left margin"

Just a _good_ idea. That was it. I looked for such a setting before, but the reason that I couldn't see it in the list of color settings was that it was white on white; the fact that there was an empty list item didn't clue me in to change one of its colors to see whether it really was an empty list item.
