I recently installed Textpad 4.4 on a new Windows 2000 Pro PC. My former PC was Win95. On my Win95 PC, I used TxpLink to force Notepad calls to invoke Textpad instead.
I upgraded Textpad to 4.5 and realised I'd not installed the TxpLink program stub to do the same thing.
The downloads page offered a TxpLink 2000 script (Batch File) which offered a means to install TxpLink and bypass the Windows 2000 File Protection feature.
It didn't work. Notepad.exe is restored automatically whether I run the batch file or manually carry out the same steps.
I'm running Windows 2000 Pro with Support Pack 2 applied.
Has anyone been able to install TxpLink successfully on Win2k ?
The Microsoft support site contains useful documents describing Windows File Protection - but there seems to be no way to turn it off - even temporarily.
My e-mail address for a direct response is matteg@gov.saanich.bc.ca - although you probably should reply to this thread. I include the address in case anyone wants to send attachments with screen images or large text files.

Re: Windows 2000 File Protection+TxpLink
Yes, I have it installed.
A few seconds/minutes after installing it, the System detected my work and asked if I wanted to repair the system which I denied (as I knew that it was my txplink).
Since then txplink works like a charm.
Only after applying a service pack to Win2K it may be necessary to re-install txplink.

Re: Windows 2000 File Protection+TxpLink
Thanks Andreas.
I did not receive a windows dialog asking what should be done with the new file.
Your response reminded me that the install script predicted I would.
Does anyone know how to examine or change the settings for Windows File Protection so I can obtain a choice of what to do with overwritten protected files ?
Microsoft's website has a Technical Document with Registry settings described but they don't seem to help. The unique registry key SFCDisable is set to zero on my PC and setting it to 1 was ineffective.
Andreas, perhaps you could search your registry and tell me what your PC has as a value ?

Re: Windows 2000 File Protection+TxpLink
As far as I can remember I did not change any settings for this.
Neither did my colleagues do anything with their Win2K and txplink was installed and Win2K asked about the replacement.
Could be one thing though:
We are all using a login that has "local administrator" permissions.
Could be that "normal" users are not asked while "admins" get asked.
