Well, I use LaTeX as 2 tools (tex-compiler and dvi-viewer). Two things are important: My LaTeX distribution (MiKTeX) has a toool that makes all the necessary passes for a file, so that you don't have to invoke the tool several times to get the toc right. And you must not allow multiple instances of TextPad.
With this and the use of Workspaces (which have to have the same name as the main file of the TeX project) you get pretty good edit-compile-edit cycles.
