using 'compare files' from the command line

Post by chris »

Is it possible to to pass in 2 files, to do a "diff" (compare files) on from the command line? I want to use TextPad as my "diff" tool in another program, but can not figure out how to make TextPad do that. (Doesn't appear to be able to).

Anyone? Otherwise, could we get this added? :)

thanks
Andreas

I think it is nonsense to start a full-featured editor if you just want to compare files with it.

I can recommend ExamDiffPro for comparing files.
It can compare files and directories in a visual way (both files/dirs are displayed next to each other with the differences highlighted in colors) and you can also run it as a command line tool which creates a diff file.

Homepage is: http://www.nisnevich.com/examdiff/examdiffpro.htm

Or try to find one of the many Windows versions of the Unix diff tool.

Nonsense?

Hardlly... Textpad is my main editor, and I want to be able to easily load it up with the specified files and have it display the differences between them, so I can edit it right there. If I used another dif program, I'd have to run that, get the results, load up textpad, load up the relevant files, figure out where the differences are, make changes if need be. Quite the process when Textpad already supports difs, and it wouldn't be hard for it to load it from the command line.

anyway... heh forgot I'd posted this a long time ago, and was just looking thru this forum and saw it, so responded.
