TextPad documentation currently uses the term "Macro" when referring to three distinct entities:

1) "Learned" macros: an unedittable binary file containing a collection of TextPad events.

2) Print macros: a set of plain ascii shorthand codes to translate and display in the header & footer.

3) Tool macros: plain ascii shorthand codes to be used as parameters when executing a tool.

Is there single underlying technology enabling these functionalities that warrants using one term for these three distinct purposes?

Let's see... (flipping open the handy-dandy dictionary)

mac·ro: n., pl. mac·ros. Computer Science; A single instruction in programming language that results in a series of instructions in machine language

So "macro" is a correct term for anything which acts as an abbreviated version for other commands.
