9.9.4: doubleclick in Explorer with running TextPad does nothing, Win11

Post by leonardoc »

Hi all,
after installation of version 9.9.4, I noticed something strange:

when in Windows explorer I doubleclick a text file,
  • if TextPad is not running, it opens and shows the file (and this is ok);
  • if TextPad is already running, nothing happens and, despite my clicking the TextPad icon in the taskbar, it's impossible to bring it into view.
So I uninstalled TextPad and then reinstalled 9.9.3. Version 9.9.3 works correctly.
I'm in Windows 11 Pro 25H2.
Wondering if anybody has experienced something like that with 9.9.4.

Thank you

I've reinstalled 9.9.4 and done a few further tests in order to delimit the problem.

When TextPad is running, in general it works and accepts to open and show the files I request from Windows explorer.
BUT
I use the option "Minimize when last document is closed".
Well, if Texpad minimizes because I've closed the last document, it becomes unresponsive and impossible to restore. The only way out is to close it with the x in context menu from the taskbar.

If I close the last document while holding the Shift key in order to prevent Textpad from minimizing, then it continues to work ok and to open documents correctly.
If I minimize TextPad manually from its title bar, still no problem.

So, what 9.9.4 does not like is the minimization that happens automatically when the last document is closed.
Hope this can be fixed in a future release.

Bye

No, not here; all appears normal.

But I should add - I've only tried with Windows 10, not Windows 11. Although I wouldn't expect the different Windows version to have any affect.

Are you clicking
  1. the task button of the running TextPad instance (that's the button that typically can have different text as per context, such as the currently open document) or
  2. a shortcut (comparible to an icon on the desktop or in the start menu) that always tries to start a new instance?
In Windows 11 it might be hard to distinguish both types these days - you may find out by right-clicking them and getting different context menus (for a task button it should also display a "Close window" entry; for a shortcut it should display file related entries like "Rename" and "Properties").

Does the behaviour change if you fiddle with Configure > Preferences... > General > Allow multiple instances to run in TextPad?

I can't reproduce it on 9.9.4 windows 11.
closing the last file minimizes, and double clicking a .txt file restores the window and opens the file.

Leonardo, prior to the current release (9.9.4), the “minimize when last document is closed” option did not work at all. (It was OK in TextPad 8.) Are you using a 3rd party Window Manager?

I'm not using a window manager, I only have OpenShell in order to adjust Windows start menu to my preferences.
I usually launch TextPad via a button in PowerPro, but nothing changes if I launch it from Windows start menu or by doubleclicking the exe in explorer.

What you say, that in previous 9.x releases the minimization did not work, has surprised me, so I got again back to 9.9.3: with it I really see the minimization working whenever I close the last document, the difference is only that in 9.9.3 TextPad remains perfectly usable thereafter.

As to what AmigoJack has asked:

In my desktop the icon of TextPad is pinned to the taskbar (I want my most used apps always in the same order along the taskbar).
I have unpinned it and repeated the test: nothing changed. Then I have activated the option to allow multiple instances to run,
still nothing changed. I've also brought 9.9.4 to my old computer (which I no longer use) where there is Windows 10: the problem happens there as well.

I can provide my configuration files (ConfigState.xml and GUIConfig.xml), and I've also taken a memory dump through task manager (about 87MB, compressed as 7z). Anything that might be helpful, just let me know.

Thank you for your attention

Leonardo, thank you for sending your configuration files.

I can now reproduce the issue and have located the cause to the floating document selector. When that is closed or docked, TextPad behaves as expected. We'll address that in the next release.
