TP Version Upgrade

Post by JerryR »

Hi.

I’m currently using TextPad 7 and want to upgrade it to 9.

I’ve purchased the release 9 upgrade license, and downloaded and ran the release 9 installation file.

I thought that after that, the release 7 would be upgraded to release 9, however I now have both versions installed.

Any thoughts on how to accomplish this version upgrade?

Hi Jerry,

TextPad tries to preserve your configuration settings from the previous major release, but you jumped from 7 to 9. I suggest you uninstall V9 and delete its configuration folder:

Code: Select all

C:\Users\USERNAME\AppData\Roaming\Helios\TextPad\9
Then install V8, run it once, and reinstall V9. That will automatically uninstall V8. If V7 is still on your PC, you can then uninstall it from Control Panel.

Thanks for that info. I appreciate it.

When I looked in Appdata, I only saw the folder for R9. No R7. I did a search for TextPad.exe and found it in the Program Files folder. That was from a 2016 installation.

Will it being there cause any issues with the upgrade to 8, and subsequent upgrade to 9?

TextPad 7 can co-exist with R8 and 9, but R9 uninstalls R8.

If the APPDATA folder for v7 does not exist, there is no point in installing R8 as that's where it would copy the initial configuration settings from. As you have already installed R9, just uninstall R7 when you're ready.

I figured that. Thanks for confirming.

Given that, is there any way to migrate the R7 settings to the R9 installation?

The R7 settings should be in the xml files in the folder you said does not exist, so there's nothing to transfer. Perhaps searching your hard drive for them might help.

Didn't see any xml files in the TP7 folder. Any chance of getting a filename to look for?

Try ConfigState.xml and GUIState.xml.

Hi bbadmin,

I did the file search and now I found the folders for 7 and 9 in the appdata\roaming\helios\textpad folder. They both contain a configstate.xml file.

So, does this mean that I can go ahead and uninstall R9, delete the R9 folder, then do the R8 install and then after that do the R9 install?

Jerry

BTW, thanks for your help on this.

Well, I've completed the R8 install, then the R9 install.

When I run R9, I closed the Readme file. Then, I tried clicking on the x to close the Explorer item on the left. When I do that, the hourglass comes on and just sits there. Can't do anything except right clicking the TextPad shortcut on the taskbar and closing the window.

Any thoughts on this behavior?
