Copy multiple filenames from the document selector

Post by IanOfYork »

Right clicking on a file in the document selector currently allows the filename to be copied to the clipboard.

Please add a matching option to the context menu for when more than one file has been selected.
This would then allow us to copy the list of all of the files included in a workspace.

Alternatively (or better still, also) add an option to the context menu for the area in the document selector that is outside the list of files which will copy the complete list of filenames.

Please note that it also contains non-files, such as search results and new documents - that's why it's called "Document Selector" and not "Files Selector".

... copy the list of all of the files included in a workspace.
... copy the complete list of filenames.
The context menu already refuses to copy the displayed name of a document that is not a file.

There is a command to copy all file names to the clipboard. It's called EditCopyAllFileNames.
You can assign it to a keyboard shortcut at
Configure | Preferences | Keyboard | Categories: Edit | Commands: EditCopyAllFileNames

In version 8 such a context menu item does not exist, but it is already available in the menu Edit > Copy Other > All File Names (while the menu item File Name behaves like you described: only copies the focused file, being deactivated on non-files). This should also exist in version 9 and a potentially assigned shortcut should then also be listed in that menu item.

Thanks Ben -- the command does indeed copy all of the filenames to the clipboard (although - oddly - not in same order as displayed), and I have added the command to my "Workspace" toolbar.

So, my original request simplifies to:
  1. add an item "Copy all filenames" to the context menu for a click anywhere in the document selector
  2. WHEN more than one file has been selected -- add an item "Copy selected filenames" to the context menu for a click on one of those filenames in the document selector
The existing function should simplify [1.]
