I've sent in a bug report which has been noted. I'm repeating it here in case anyone else finds this useful:
Either 8.13.0 or 8.14.0 has changed current line highlighting so that the highlight obliterates underscores, making it very hard to actually edit something containing underscores - like many program source files.
Highlighting problem in 8.13 or 8.14

This was a problem in 8.13, but version 8.14 has fixed / changed this.
The box is not displayed if the foreground and background colours are the same. Nothing in the config says this, but it seems to work.

NOT fixed by 8.14
I never installed 8.13 after 8.12, and the problem appeared in 8.14. The reason for that is probably because it isn't the same problem you have linked to.

There was a change to add the box to the line highlighting in version 8.13.
This was quickly changed in 8.14 so that the box was suppressed if the foreground and background colours were the same.
See https://forums.textpad.com/viewtopic.php?t=13576 for how to get the underscores back.

I'm not messing about with background and foreground colours, which are still set to the defaults, just to work around a problem which was introduced, according to you in 8.13, and is present in 8.14. It's a bug: it needs to be fixed, and was not fixed in 8.14. If you like the bug, fine, but don't go trying to defend it.
Who? Me?
Not defending anything. I don't work here.
Just saying that the change that caused the problem has been further changed so that it is now possible to avoid the problem.
A simple checkbox per document class would be the best option, but there is a workaround if you want to use it.

But first i had to edit the [..]\AppData\Roaming\Helios\TextPad\8\ConfigState.xml and remove spaces in the classnames, because it was impossible to change anything in the settings (see: https://forums.textpad.com/viewtopic.php?t=13582)
