How can I display the total number of lines at the bottom of the screen when opening a document?

Make sure the status bar is displayed: View > Status Bar . TextPad displays the file name, size, number of lines and encoding in the status bar when opening a document. To display these statistics at any other time, press Ctrl+F1 .

ALT+Return displays the document properties including the line count.

yes - the Alt-Return exists for a very long time - I used it often at my previous employer, that was at least 15 years ago ...
