Preferences, 'Put shortcuts to Textpad on:' are grayed out

Post by ech3 »

At work, I'm using a portable version of Textpad 8.0.1 64 bit on Windows 7.

I'd like to create a Context Menu entry for Textpad so I can right-click and edit any file, but these boxes in Preferences are all grayed out.

And I can't use regedit because I don't have the privileges.

Previously, with Textpad 7.5, as long as Textpad was running there was a "temporary" context menu entry (don't know what else to call it) that would work. I just had to launch Textpad once, then I could right click on any file.

Does anyone know how I can get that back with 8.0.1?

Since version 7, the shortcut options have been disabled for copies of TextPad which have not been formally installed. They rely on entries in the registry and the whole premise of the portable setup is that it leaves the registry clean. TextPad's settings were moved from the registry to disk files for the same reason.

OK, makes sense.

Where I work I'm not allowed to install any software, hence my use of the portable version.

But it would be nice to have the option of adding these features. Being able to right click and edit in Textpad is hugely important. Saves a lot of time.
