Block of text is wider than number of selected characters

(BLOCK SELECT MODE is enabled).

I select ONE character in the first row. I then enter an integer in the 'GO TO' dialog box, tick 'Extend Selection' and press 'GO TO'.

The resulting block of text should be ONE character wide but it is often wider.

Note: This problem also occurs when more than one character is selected and regardless of which row the selected character(s) is/are located.

What do I need to do to solve this problem?
