Difference in displayed characters in versions 4.7.2 and 5.4

Post by Brad in Spokane »

Hello,

I am a long-time Textpads user. The applications that I support import and export text files and in my years of experience there's nothing better than Textpad for working with these files. For the first time in more than ten years I have encountered an issue that I cannot resolve by searching these forums.

I wish I had a place to host pictures but at the moment I don't. I will do my best to describe what I am seeing... Opening a particular file with Textpad 4.7.2 in Auto format there is what appears to be a little black rectangle. Opening the file in binary I find the value of this character is "01", which I believe means "Start of Heading".

If I open the same file with Textpad 5.4.2 and Auto format, there is no rectangle, just a space, that doesn't appear empty when Visible Spaces are displayed. Viewing the file in Binary format, it has the same value (01).

I was able to fix the problem by replacing the rectangle with a space but it is much harder to find these if the rectangle is not displayed.

I really hope there is a parameter responsible for this issue. I have searched the forums and cannot find this being reported before.

Thanks in advance for any assistance,

Brad

I believe this is more of a font issue.

If switch to Courier New or Arial, I get an empty rectangle. If I switch to Courier, I get a narrow black rectangle.

However, by default I use the Anonymous font, and that shows me a blank.
(2[Bb]|[^2].|.[^Bb])

That is the question.

Ken,

Thanks for your great suggestion. We have tried Courier New and Arial and still see nothing but an empty space. In Dotum we see a small 'r' and in Meiro and YaHei we see the outline of a box.

These are better than nothing.

Thanks,

Brad
